While I would love to write full time, I cannot. I suspect many of you are in the same situation. We work at a job that pays the bills, all the while wishing we could do something else. It is easy for Oprah to talk about pursuing passions and “finding your truth” when she already has a billion dollars. Tell that to the single mom working three jobs, just trying to make ends meet. “Truth finding” just isn’t possible for most people.

Life throws challenges in our path. Unfortunately, I cannot offer any tips for magically turning your passion into a full-time, money-making endeavor. If I knew that secret, I would be doing it now.

Instead, I can only offer this one nugget. You must make time for yourself, even if it is only 5 minutes every day. If you enjoy writing, carry a notebook with you and jot down ideas, story threads, sentence fragments, whatever, while you are riding the bus to work or standing in line somewhere. I do this and have lots of nonsense in the notebook.

Some of it may never lead to an actual story. So, what was the value? It gave me a temporary escape. For just a few moments, I was in another place where I controlled what happened. No one told me what I could or could not do. It was MY world.

Sadly, we cannot hop on our private jets and escape to a luxurious resort whenever we feel a bit of stress. This is the real world. When it throws challenges at you, stop, take a deep breath, and escape into your world for a few moments. The weather is always nice there. It may be the break you need to keep going. Do it for yourself!
